Protecting trade secrets in a messenger requires a set of controls: employee access, device security, group management, file retention, and encryption. Post-quantum capabilities can matter for information with a long confidentiality lifetime, but they do not replace these controls or, on their own, guarantee “organizational security.”
First, identify what must remain confidential
Inventory your data and the paths it travels: product roadmaps, contracts, customer information, access keys, and research files do not necessarily carry the same risks. For each category, ask who should see it, what disclosure would mean, and how long it must remain confidential.
NIST’s post-quantum migration guidance emphasizes identifying cryptographic assets and dependencies. Without that inventory, you might upgrade the messenger while a copy of the same file remains in email, shared storage, or an old backup under different protection.
Do not confuse a future threat with today’s risks
In the “harvest now, decrypt later” scenario, an attacker retains encrypted data for a potential future decryption capability. Data that must remain confidential for years needs an earlier migration plan. This scenario does not mean that all of today’s conversations can be broken.
NIST standardized ML-KEM in FIPS 203. This standard defines one key-establishment component; it does not establish that every future attack is impossible or constitute approval of the entire product.
Meanwhile, a former employee’s account, an infected laptop, or an incorrectly shared file could cause a disclosure today. A security program must address both time horizons.
Enterprise messenger evaluation checklist
| Area | Practical question | Suitable evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Membership | What happens to an employee’s device access after they leave? | Member-removal and active-session tests |
| Content | How are text, attachments, calls, and recordings each protected? | Separate documentation for each layer |
| Recovery | Who holds the recovery phrase or backup? | A recovery procedure tested with nonsensitive data |
| Devices | What differs between personal and managed phones? | Access policy and actual settings |
| Metadata | What operational information is logged and retained? | A clear, traceable policy |
| Upgrades | How does an old or incompatible client behave? | Supported versions and compatibility tests |
| Incidents | Who handles incidents, and how are vulnerabilities reported? | A response process and a named responsible party |
This table provides selection criteria, not test results or service rankings. An organization’s legal and contractual requirements need an assessment appropriate to its sector; the name of an algorithm is not proof of legal compliance.
Where does Livara fit in this evaluation?
Livara’s security documentation describes LVR1 for direct conversations and LGS1 for private groups. The same page distinguishes routing and membership information from encrypted content and describes a different boundary for server-side recording mode. This is a product description, not an independent organizational audit report.
During evaluation, connect each feature claim to the actual version and relevant evidence. Proof Lab is useful for limited checks such as comparing a file against a reference hash, but it does not replace access-control testing, code review, or device assessment.
Assess availability during network disruptions separately
Encryption cannot create a network path that does not exist. A service’s operation during an international internet shutdown depends on actual access to its server, DNS, network routes, and login and notification dependencies. A post-quantum algorithm does not imply “full operation during every outage.”
To test continuity, run internet-disconnection, network-change, and reconnection scenarios with test data. Record recovery times, undelivered messages, and the behavior of offline users. If you define an alternative route, assess its confidentiality too.
A good organizational choice is one whose protection, limitations, and failure behavior can be explained and tested.
